Random Thought

Are there assumptions you hold that could be holding you back? Look beyond them and find much value in what is really there.

It’s Flower Planting Time

It’s finally spring. I couldn’t resist buying some lovely pansies yesterday at Wallie-World! 1.5 years ago I planted some perinneal flowers in this flower bed, but Wrangler got to thinking it was his bedroom and digging ground, and I’m worried many of them didn’t survive. I guess we will see pretty soon! Fall is really my favorite season, but spring has many fine points too!

Sitting up Fine

I got to spend some time with Jessica, Delilah, and Bryce today. I can’t believe how much Bryce changes when I come back from these short trips! He’s sitting up all alone now.

With the Easter Bunny

Working right there beside the Wal-Mart photo place it’s hard for Jessica to resist getting lots of photos of the kids! They are pretty cute though!

Why God Created Children (and, in the Process, Grandchildren)

To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students… here is something to make you chuckle.

Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God’s omnipotence did not extend to His own children.

After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve.

And the first thing he said was “DON’T!”

“Don’t what?” Adam replied.

“Don’t eat the forbidden fruit.” God said.

“Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve . . . we have forbidden fruit!”

“No Way!”

“Yes way!”

“Do NOT eat the fruit!” said God.

“Why?”

“Because I am your Father and I said so!” God replied, wondering why He hadn’t stopped creation after making the elephants.

A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break, and He was ticked!

“Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?” God asked.

“Uh huh,” Adam replied.

“Then why did you?” said the Father.

“I don’t know,” said Eve.

“She started it!” Adam said.

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

“DID NOT!”

Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own.

Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed.

But, there is reassurance in the story!

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be hard on yourself.

If God had trouble raising children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

More Calves

We returned home to find two more lovely heifer calves. What are the odds of using a bull with the plans of breeding replacement heifers and getting ALL heifer calves? That’s what’s happened to Richard!!! Well, I take that back, out of ten calves sired by Buck—the Beefmaster bull—there was one bull calf (so far). Just three more cows to calve now.

Speaking in Saskatchewan

Here’s Richard at the first show in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. He presented two Low-Stress Livestock Handling workshops to a total of about 170 people between Saskatoon and Regina, SK.

Many in the audience had seen Dad’s presentations and felt Richard did a very good job of “substituting” for Bud Williams! The best complement was one woman who said to me, “it looked just like a Bud Williams school, I was looking at you who look so much like Bud and hearing the words from Richard Bud would have said.”

The shows were set up by the Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan, Inc.

Other sponsors were:

Heartland Livestock Services
Pound-Maker Agventures Ltd.
Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association
Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food
Saskatchewan Pastures Program
The Western Producer

From Saskatoon to Regina

On the drive from Saskatoon to Regina, I was watching the sun set and looking ahead for landmarks that might look great in the setting sun. Just before it finally set, I saw this grainery (grain elevator) come up on the correct side. I asked Adele if she would be ready to pull over, and she drove along slowly until I got the grainery in the correct position for this shot.

In Canada!

We had a great trip getting to Saskatoon yesterday. The drive to Kansas City was smooth, both flights (KCI to Minneapolis and Minneapolis to Saskatoon) were without incident. We even made it through customs with ease as soon as Richard clarified that “Stockmanship” didn’t have anything to do with the stock market!

Adele of the Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan showed us some of the highlights of Saskatoon and the surrounding area this afternoon.

This is the Delta Bessborough hotel built in the 1930s by a government program similar to the WPA or CCC in the US.

This is my first trip to Canada, the top flag is different from at home!

Here’s the hotel from the river side.

The "Skipping Stones" Bridge.

The dairy barn at the University was huge and lovely!

Richard and Adele

We drove south of Saskatoon a bit and saw some lovely country.

Richard speaks tomorrow here in Saskatoon and then Friday in Regina.

First Calves of the Spring

Calving started off with a bang when we woke this chilly "first day of spring" morning to two new calves, both lovely little heifers.

Summer Sausage Weekend, Part II

Garland missed out on the main Summer Sausage Weekend event, but got to help us make another, smaller, batch today!

Above Richard gets the casing on the end of the “Sausage Pooper” (which he designed and built).

Richard puts the meat down into the “pooper” (left), and Garland pushes it down into the casing. What a team!
