Saturday the demonstration portion of Richard’s presentation on Stockmanship was held at Rex and Amy Hamilton’s farm. They raise native prairie grasses and flowers, and Amy graciously gave me some plants for our small flower gardens. Check out their web page here. We chose the following flowers: Butterfly Milkweed; Columbine; Ozark Glade Coneflower; Purple Prairie Clover; Royal Catchfly; Skullcap, Downey; and Yellow Coneflower.
When we were digging in the right hand spot, we dug up lots (a hundred?) of various sized bulbs. They appeared to be alive, but hadn’t sprouted. Richard and I had planted some small bulbs just over a year ago, was this from them? A mystery! We watered the spot heavily after planting the new plants, and maybe that will spark the bulbs to sprout?
We had planted a nice variety of perennial flowers in the left hand spot 2 years ago. They came back nicely last spring, but just one of them came back this year. Amy wondered whether some of them might have been biannual and not perennial. Maybe so! This planting is of native perennials, so maybe they will stand up better under our laid-back care? I’ll keep you posted!
