Post-script: My mother emailed and said I was incorrect, these were not snowflakes, they were sleet frozen into the stars. And, as is always with what our mothers tell us, she was entirely correct!
Richard came in and said to grab my camera and set it on super macro. I ran outside to find the most perfect snowflakes I’ve ever seen! I snapped these shots quickly and came inside and checked that they turned out. By the time I headed back out to take more, the flakes had changed to sleet and weren’t these wonderfully perfect stars! Photo on the left is the full-sized photo. Photo on the right is cropped to just the snowflake. Click on any photo to see it larger.
I did a little research on the ‘net and found this great info about snowflakes (which, now that I know these aren’t snowflakes, isn’t totally applicable; but the page is neat-o, so I’m going to leave it linked here).
