My horse, Eight Bells, put in a valiant effort to win second place in the Derby, but then she collapsed while slowing down. They found that she had compound fractures of both front ankles, and they immediately put her down. The way she stayed in the front pack and rounded the last turn I thought she might have a real chance at winning, but she was 4 3/4 lengths off at the end.
